THE TIMELESS CLASSIC

The essence of a brilliant musical drama film does not merely lie in its dialogue or a single shot in it, but the golden hit songs that are being passed down from generation to generation. Originally the Broadway musical, “The Sound of Music” was adapted as a film in 1956 and won several Academy Awards. In the blink of an eye, it has been over 50 years. Chessman is honored to collaborate with the Venetian Macao in bringing The London West End Production of “The Sound of Music” to the audiences in Macao. This world-famous musical will be performed in the Venetian Theatre from 20 December 2017 to 7 January 2018, so as to continue the timeless musical legend.

The Chinese translations of “The Sound of Music” vary across mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. In mainland China, literal translation is adopted when translating the Chinese version, which is “音樂之聲” ; the Taiwan version “真善美” (Truth, Goodness and Beauty) slightly conveys the hidden meaning brought by the film; and the translation “仙樂飄飄處處聞” (Heavenly Music Everywhere) in Hong Kong and Macao stems from a line in the poem “The Song of Everlasting Regret” written by Bai Juyi. The movie is based on a true love story of Maria Rainer and Georg von Trapp, who were a sister and a retired captain respectively. During the outbreak of the Second World War, Maria was responsible for teaching the seven children of the captain. She used music to teach and inspire them. After working there for a period of time, she fell in love with the captain and they get married. Later, they formed a family singing group together with the children to support their living. “The Sound of Music” is a perfect blend of characters, singing, dancing and story. The rich and clear voice of Maria touches our souls and reminds us of the warm interaction between the children and her.

Although there is an abundance of musicals established rapidly, one after another, “The Sound of Music” is still one of the best-loved classics. What is it about the “The Sound of Music” that is so endlessly intriguing? In fact, The London West End Production never ceases to amaze the audiences since they will hold an audition in search of some local children to participle in the show every time. As always, 18 children from Hong Kong and Macao were chosen to be part of the von Trapp family. Not only the audiences, but the fixed cast members also find it very interesting to work with different children each time.

All the classic songs in “The Sound of Music” are so moving and energetic which can ignite our passion for music. When we were still students, appreciating “Do-Re-Mi” was a must-do during music lessons. Maria taught the children about major scale by linking the solfège syllables with English homophones. Learning music theories can be hard sometimes as it takes time to remember them. But after listening to this song for a few times, the major scale was engraved on our mind spontaneously. With the same name as the musical, the song “The Sound of Music” fully demonstrates Maria's admiration for nature. Her voice is so heavenly that makes us get goosebumps. In the movie, she strolled along the mountain paths and traversed through the canopy of trees, soaking herself into the nature. “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” is also the all-time favorite. Despite the heavy rain, a couple aged 16 to 17 kept singing and dancing. This scene vividly evokes our memories of puppy love. In the song “Edelweiss”, the captain expressed his patriotism through the lyrics in an abstract way. There are many more classics songs in the musical. Let us wait and see how the songs will be performed on the stage, and also how the children’s participation will bring out the best in the musical!
