SENSE OF PLACE

Art has long been deemed profound and unapproachable by many since the old days. However, Peter Judson, a designer and illustrator based in London, proves to us that “life itself is an art” through his art work. It all depends on whether we are able to discover the great things in our lives. If you think art is an unfathomable trick, you might want to read this issue of Chessman Post to get to know more about Peter Judson, who loves to describe the city in smooth lines and sleek, geometric patterns.

Graduated from Kingston University, Peter Judson was majored in illustration. His inspirations often derive from the city views in the vicinity. With a whimsical, futuristic charm, his illustrations pay homage to Memphis, a design movement in the 80’s. Dating back to 1981, Ettore Sottsass and other designers formed an Italian design and architecture group in Milan, which strove to break the thoughts that firmly embedded in people’s mind. This “Memphis Group” attempted to get rid of the traditional color coordination, and they used wavy lines and geometric shapes in their art work. Similarly, Peter Judson has always adopted this design style his creations.

Have you found yourself apathetic about the cityscapes and soundscapes in your life? If so, spend some time to learn about Peter Judson’s illustrations. He knows the way of finding geometry in our world. Everything can be turned to geometric shapes in his eyes. A piece of leaf can be read as a green circle, while the corner of the street can be formed by several squares. In the project “Bus, Stop and enjoy yourself”, Peter Judson acted as an architect in the two-dimensional world. He re-designed and transformed the existing bus stops in London into vibrant playgrounds. He also knows how to design furniture. In his project “Legs”, he drew 108 table legs to remind us not to neglect the existence of table legs. Peter Judson always includes the tiny little things in our lives in his art work.

The interesting thing is that, it was the “potato smiley” which prompted him to pursue the dream of being a designer and illustrator. To him, “the best ideas are always the simple ones.” Whenever he starts a project, the first thing that he would do is to wander around the city and take tons of photos. Then, he would read them all over and over again to gain inspirations. “I want to make people smile, that’s my main goal”, he said.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” It is surprising to know that this old Confucius quote is one of Peter Judson’s favorites. He has captured different fragments in our cities, and together they have become a big puzzle. If we focus more on the small things in our lives, we will find that art is ubiquitous.
