「Victo Ngai」

The final season of Game of Thrones has swept the world. Though the show’s final season received mixed reviews from long-time fans, the wonderful campaign named ‘Create for the Thrones’ has stunned the audience. The results are astonishing, meanwhile a rich and lush illustrations, filled with wonder and delight, went viral because of its unique style and vivid colors. What makes us even more surprised is that the young and talented illustrator, Victo Ngai, is indeed from Hong Kong.

Telling story through illustration
Victo has always loved to tell stories and communicate ideas with drawings since she was a kid, thus her dynamic images have strong and purposeful narratives that look like still shots from movies. ‘I love listening to audiobooks when I am drawing, especially those with strong narratives such as “Game of Thrones” and “The Lord of Rings”.’ Needless to say, she has been a fan of Game of Thrones for years and she had never thought that she could have the opportunity to draw for this TV show. She was invited to put her skills and creativity on iconic props from the show, The Hand of Queen Pin, reimagining it as something new. She dove into the symbolism behind the Hand of the Queen pin Daenerys gives to Tyrion at the end of season 6.The illustration is a visual and sensual treat, with a complex and layered story filled with sensual imaginary and stylings.

Illustration is about visual communication and problem solving, and illustrators have to demonstrate both concept and stylistic ability of work. Victo is good at using visuals to tell a story and create a world that is able to bring people into and get lost in. She can always convey emotions, communicate ideas and arouse empathy through illustrations, creating captivating illustrations with elaborate narratives beyond the barrier of language.

The one and only Victo Ngai
Victo’s unique style features swirls of lines and colors that are alive with energy and movement. In much of her work, the ornate forms with a traditional feel are created with the signature palette of oranges, reds, browns and greens. This unique style helps to attract commissions from both publications and companies, and she did not recognize her own style until her work was described as ‘Oriental’ by the public. She did not intentionally add traditional elements in her work yet due to the exposure to Asian art and craft, she unknowingly has developed keen taste on intricate lines and vibrant feat colors, and the energy, colors and dense urban textures from Hong Kong have also worked their ways in her work. Being emerged in multiple cultures when living in New York also granted her valuable arsenals of both Eastern and Western thinking, philosophies to draw inspiration forms.

Often dreams seem impossible because they indeed impossible from our current venture point, yet in the world of illustration every seemingly impossible thing can be possible. She hopes that people will get lost in the elaborate, adventurous worlds when they see her work, encouraging them to make up own stories based on the expressive characters even though she provides a clear description of her intended stories.

Embrace changes, Explore more
Victo thinks that there’s no single attribute which can conclude one’s identity of work, and her work is shaped by all that shapes her as a person. Moreover, the artistic journey is a dynamic one, that one’s ability, understanding and view of world changes as one changes. As people learn and experience, some previously deemed impossibilities would no longer be impossible.

‘It’s boring to draw in the same style without the slightest change for 10 or 20 years, isn’t it? No one’s style can remain totally unchanged because your surroundings, where your inspiration comes from, keeps changing constantly, otherwise your work is insincere.’

Everyone has a unique style because everyone has a unique life. Inspiration is unpredictable, but if one is open to be inspired, one will get the most extraordinary ideas out of ordinary things. Victo keeps forcing herself out of comfort zone and routines, re-examining the familiars and the mundane with a new pair of lens. This is probably the reason why she can bring out the unique voice in her works.
