GETAWAY TO A BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE

A new space dedicated to experimental approaches to contemporary art in nestled in a sleepy Swiss village called Susch. The tiny hamlet with a population of less than 300 used to be a quiet transit hub. With the opening of the Muzeum Susch, positive energy has been injected into this remote yet beautiful village. This artistic space has encouraged a ‘slow-art’ approach to appreciating art in a contemplative and quiet context.

Museum Susch is founded by Kulczyk, a polish entrepreneur and solicitor who has been a long-term supporter of contemporary art. Art and commercial collide into one on the basis of her own interpretations of life. She loves to collect artworks created by artists from Poland and other Eastern Europe, especially female artists. The exhibitions in the museum predominantly focused on female artists, aiming to elevate the visibility of women artists in the world. For instance, the opening exhibition, titled ‘A Woman looking at Men looking at women, explores female representation, sexual emancipation and the subversion of gender roles, mixing work from Kulczyk’s collection with international works. It develops and proposes new languages and methods to understand the role of women in arts, science and technology to discuss historical and current questions.

What makes the museum stands out from the commercial galleries is that the museum is more a ‘laboratory’. It brings together scientists, artists and thinkers to talk together and to come up with potentially but complementary interpretations and explanations of the world we inhabit. The museum shows a number of site-specific works by international contemporary artists, alongside a program of temporary curated exhibitions.

Museum Susch is located in a campus on the site of a 12th century monastery and former brewery. Architects Chasper Schmidlin and Lukas Voellmy are responsible for restoring and expanding the buildings. In order to preserve the environment, the project entailed minimal architectural interventions, showing sympathy to the history of the building, while creating a space for contemporary art museum in an unusual setting in the mountains. They successfully concocted a magical place where the history, fabric, contemporary art and the raw geology of the landscape collide. It also shows incredible attention to detail throughout, standing as a testament to local craftsmanship and the architects’ ability to deploy a limited palette of materials in unexpected new ways.

With the ambitious program and a unique architectural beauty, the sleepy village that connected the upper and lower part of Engadin has now turned into a magical new galley allowing local people to see art in the public spaces and attract visitors from all over the world. If you are looking for a place that allows you to appreciate art in a contemplative and quiet context, you should definitely give Museum Susch a try.
