YUNI YOSHIDA'S DREAM ESCAPE

The simplistic and natural essence found in Japanese minimalist design usually creates a completely relaxing atmosphere that calms our mind and nourish our soul. However, the new generation of young artists have been lavishing full-color spreads of their key works these years and Japanese artist and art director Yuni Yoshida is definitely one of them. She made a name of herself by creating a series of surrealistic work demonstrating the beauty of colors and weirdness.

The innovative visuals for Naomi Watanabe’s exhibition “Naomi’s Party’ caught people’s attention instantly because of the playful and surreal design that makes Naomi especially unique and attractive. Naomi transformed into steamed buns on streamer, juicy peach ice-cream and a warrior wearing a pair of boots made of lipstick covers in a unique and playful way to showcase her irresistible charisma. Naomi’s favorite things in life are ‘fashion’ and ‘food’, thus Yoshida combines these two elements to create something groundbreaking and interesting in her work.

Yoshida’s vivid range of work often features food and female models in surreal, dreamlike settings that encourage people to look a little bit closer. Her stunning imagery can easily draw people in from first glance with its crafty detail and charming quirkiness that people may wonder if she uses any digital manipulation to create the beautifully surreal visuals. In fact, she is more of a practical kind of person and she creates almost every piece of work manually. She feels that the excitement of the creation process can only be reflected through manually crafted arts. “The unique charm of an optical illusion is that you can create fantasy with real materials, or in other words, find something interesting by changing our perspective.” She said in one of her interviews. She blurs the lines between digital manipulation and reality by creating work that are impressively and meticulously crafted by hand.

The depiction of female in Yoshida’s work can always break the mold and inspire female to express themselves fearlessly. Her exhibition “Dinalog” will be held from November 15 to December 1 at the Laforet Museum Harajuku. The exhibit will include a mix of new and old works by her as well as some sketches to better help visitors understand the artist’s process, and entry to the exhibition is completely free of charge! If you are a fan of Yoshida, time to plan for your next trip to Tokyo.
