EVERYDAY TREASURES

As the Chinese New Year approaches, we can spot an avalanche of Fai Chun and traditional New Year’s decoration along the streets. But this year, we can also find the ubiquitous posters of the different Chinese New Year movies. Of all the posters, the most eye-catching one to me is composed of the following things: some of the well-known and respected actors and actresses, such as Sammo Hung and Teddy Robin, sit in a row and burst into laughter, while Bob Lam is wearing a fluffy wig. Directed by Andrew Lam, this movie is called “A Lifetime Treasure”.

The “Mo Lei Tau” (literally means “nonsensical”) culture has long been one of the most quintessential elements of Hong Kong movies. The illogical contents and nonsensical parodies are always impressive. For example, the simple sentences like “Let’s take a sip of tea, and have a Chinese bun” and “Go back to Mars, the Earth is so dangerous” are very easy to remember. Playing on words and telling corny jokes are never a piece of cake, and yet the movie “A Lifetime Treasure” succeeds in grasping the “Mo Lei Tau” elements, making the audiences laugh so hard. The story is about two men who are assigned to go to stir up troubles in the elderly home, and they turn out to be friends with the elderly. Then, they form an alliance against the consortium to protect the elderly home. Generally speaking, a New Year movie is constituted of many jokes, but “A Lifetime Treasure” contains some touching scenes, adding special meanings to the movie.

A meaningful script is not complete without the acting skills of the experienced actors and actresses. Andrew Lam invited a lot of celebrated actors including Sammo Hung, Kelly Niu and Lam Suet to participate in the movie. Some of them said they participated in the movie just because they wanted to support Hong Kong’s movie industry, while others said they agreed with the theme “caring for the elderly” of the movie. With all the experienced actors and actresses assembling together, this movie is no doubt worth watching. How would other actors and actresses feel to work with all these sophisticated people? “It’s like a dream come true. Growing up, I had always watched Sammo Hung’s movies, no matter his action or comedy movies. He acts so well. I have learned a lot when shooting with him. His eyes’ expressions, actions, facial expressions and emotions…I really have learned so many things from him.” It is also worth noting that Louis Cheung, Bob Lam and Ivana Wong were the main actors and actresses of the drama “Inbound Troubles”. Having a good rapport with each other, they have taken the movie to another level.

There are a number of Chinese New Year movies this year. Compared to the same kind of jokes and story settings, the heart-warming one, “A Lifetime Treasure”, might be a better choice. “Treasuring your family” is a cliché, but it is always true. During the Chinese New Year holiday, perhaps we should learn to put down our smartphones, and spend some time talking to our family members.
