THE NATURE HAS OUR BACK

'Close your eyes, prick your ears, and from the softest sound to the wildest noise, from the simplest tone to the highest harmony, from the most violent, passionate scream to the gentlest words of sweet reason, it is by Nature who speaks, revealing her being, her power, her life, and her relatedness so that a blind person, to whom the infinitely visible world is denied, can grasp an infinite vitality in what can be heard'. — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

We are living in a ‘global village’ that people throughout the world are interconnected with the use of new media technologies. There are no boundaries in the global village, that all information and messages can traverse the globe in a split second. In the new era, we all are connected to each other in a way that it never really existed before, meanwhile more and more people have developed an addictive relationship with social media, heightening the risk of depression inevitably. The new generation is increasingly becoming unaware of their surroundings, gradually losing themselves and losing touch with nature. Spanish-born artist Helena Perez Garcia guides people to rejuvenate own souls and rediscover the beauty of nature with a series of healing surreal illustrations.

Garcia’s works are mysterious, conceptual, and rich in detail and color. The introspective blue tone colors give people a sense of sorrow, yet when you really look at it you feel tranquility. The characters are often depicted in surreal situations, triggering people’s emotion without using any words. The inner lives of the characters are depicted in a detailed way, which leads people to discover their own inner selves with the characters, letting go of all the negative energy that no longer serves us.

‘They are looking inside themselves and asking questions… most of my personal work revolves from the idea of identity; how we perceive ourselves, how the personality changes and the idea of the self.’ People are prone to compare themselves with other people, especially when social media keeps navigating and thriving in the society. Meanwhile, the link between social media and depression is evolving as well. Social media channels can have a deleterious effect on confidence and identity. People perceive themselves through the lens of others, and by all means trying to change themselves to fit the ‘standard’ created by social media, which eventually led to anxiety, depression and struggles.

‘I want people to look at my illustrations twice and unveil the meaning of the different layers.’ Everybody will have their own interpretation of an artwork from different perspectives. Gracia’s work provides a space for people to calm their minds and reconnect with themselves. The natural elements naturally guide people to reflect themselves and to think about the connection between human and nature, that the two are entwined with each other. If we experience everything around us as ‘myself’, experience everything as part of us, changes may happen. It’s time for us to declutter our minds and souls. Put down your phone, take time to unplug, embrace the beautiful nature as it revitalizes our spirits and rejuvenate our souls. Experience everything as part of us, to help us stay grounded and focused.
