LIBERATE THE COINS

Art is often deemed inaccessible. It’s hard for people to carve out time for art exhibitions as we are all living a fast-paced life in this incredibly competitive society. Indeed, art is everywhere, influencing us on a daily basis, whether we realize it or not. All of the things we can see in everyday life can be turned into art. Artist Micah Adams transforms coins into exceptional sculptures, coining a new art form to stun the world.

The Toronto-based artist is probably a bit of hoarder in the eyes of others as he basically saves every tiny thing like toys, bottle caps, beach finds and even teeth in his life. Over the years, he would cast all these things into metal, turning them into something tiny bronzes or miniature monuments. That lead him to look for tiny things that were already metal that he could use, so he started to look at coins and their designs for things that he could cut-out. Since then, a series of tiny metal plants, animals and buildings sculptures are liberated from coins by Adams.

Using a jeweler’s saw with a blade a quarter-of-a-millimeter wide, a flourishing maple, which consists of hundreds of tiny metal maple leaves, appears in front of people’s eyes. The embossed animals, figures, and objects from coins of different sizes and denominations are all molded into different tiny sculptures. Some are even transformed into pendants, which is exactly what ladies want and need. Each piece of work is hand cut using the same basic tool. He started working at a smaller scale in Art College while making sculptures, and he spent his free time in the jewelry and metalsmithing department. The patterns to him are the essence of the coins, and they are given new life after Adams extracted them from the coins. See, an ordinary coin can also become the most unique and special craft. Nothing is impossible in this world!

Art is hidden within all the tiny things in our daily lives. Our daily lives may be mundane, yet a lot of brilliant work indeed originate from the seemingly ‘not-so-interesting’ lives. A great artist is always capable to create something out of nothing and makes art more visible. Art is important in our daily lives as it can give us emotions that lift up our spirit. Whether it’s paintings, music or crafts, it can a huge impact our moods and emotions.
